Pillowcase and Prep

Past Event

We're kicking off Safer Communities Month by teaming up with Red Cross Australia and our own Bushfire Risk Officer, Graham Furlong, to bring you a bushfire preparation event suitable for all ages.
Running simultaneously is a Pillowcase Project for the kids and a Winter Burn Talk for the adults.
The Pillowcase Project is an emergency resilience education program designed to help build children’s knowledge and capacity in emergency preparedness. Delivered by Red Cross staff and volunteers, the lesson encourages children to be active participants in their own emergency preparedness. It is fun and interactive as well as informative. The workshop includes:
• a discussion about the importance of being prepared;
• an activity demonstrating how to prepare one’s mind for the feelings and emotions that may arise before, during and after an emergency; and
• an activity considering what to pack in an emergency kit.
Each participant is then given a pillowcase to decorate and take home, to start their own personal emergency kit.
While the kids are busy with that, Graham Furlong will be walking the adults through how to successfully conduct a winter burn on your property to better protect against fire come the drier months.
Morning tea will be provided for this free event. Please note that while it is not necessary to bring a child along to attend the Winter Burn Talk, parents must remain in the building if their children are doing the Pillowcase Project. If you do not wish to attend the Winter Burn Talk, you will need to stay with your child during their project.
