The Shire of Chittering have successfully received funding for the second round of the Department of Fire and Emergency Services’ 2022-2023 Mitigation Activity Fund Grants Program.

The total sum of these funds is $248,600.00 (exclusive of GST), and the allocation of these funds will allow the Shire of Chittering to perform fifteen mitigation activities, including building firebreaks, reducing fuel loads and hazard reduction burns to minimise the potential risks of fires.

“We are really appreciative of the support the Department of Fire and Emergency Services provides for us. This funding will help us make Chittering as bushfire safe as possible,” the Shire of Chittering’s Bushfire Risk Officer, Graham Furlong said.

The Emergency Services Minister, the Hon. Stephen Dawson MLC is predicting that the 2022-2023 summer will be a challenging bushfire season, and is supportive for all mitigation activities to make Western Australia as bushfire safe as possible.

"All the weather information points towards a very challenging bushfire season. As the Emergency Services Minister, I welcome all the different strategies and programs that we can muster to be totally prepared for any major fires that we face,” the Emergency Services Minister, the Hon. Stephen Dawson MLC said.

In the last round of the Department of Fire and Emergency Services’ 2021-2022 Mitigation Activity Fund Grants Program, the Shire of Chittering spent $480,000 of its allotted $500,000 grant, with works on firebreaks, chemical treatment, burning treatment and mechanical treatment, throughout the entire region.

"The Mitigation Activity Fund grants program is a vital part of this approach and provides funding to empower and enable local governments to reduce the threat of bushfires in their area,” Mr Dawson said.

Throughout the last round, the Shire’s volunteer fire brigade members and staff worked over 750 hours to complete various jobs across the region.

“The Shire of Chittering’s volunteer fire brigade members and staff have put in an enormous effort to make the region as bushfire safe as possible,” the Shire of Chittering’s Community Emergency Services Manager & Chief Bush Fire Control Officer David Carroll said. “The ability to spend as much money of the last round’s funding is also an incredible achievement.”

The Shire of Chittering congratulates its Community Emergency Services Manager & Chief Bush Fire Control Officer, David Carroll, and its Bushfire Risk Officer, Graham Furlong, for their successful application for the second round of the Department of Fire and Emergency Services’ 2022-2023 Mitigation Activity Fund Grants Program.
