Chittering Seniors Get Active and Hang Out

The Shire of Chittering celebrated the “young at heart” in the Community between 10 November and 17 November, as part of WA Seniors Week.

Chittering seniors travelled to three different locations to discover new ways to stay active in Chittering on an Active Ageing Bus Tour.  They enjoyed a walk through Blackboy Ridge, with plenty of geology, bugs and plants on display, followed by a sumptuous morning tea provided by Chittering Landcare.

To cool down they then travelled to Water Ponyz Swim School where, thanks to sponsorship from Suzette from the swim school, they participated in a fun filled water aerobics session.  There was more laughter than exercise at times, and some very competitive races for ducks in the water!

After a stop off for lunch, our seniors then took part in a mini workout thanks to the staff at Gener8 Fitness in Bullsbrook. The workout focussed on movement and promoting strength in muscles used for everyday actions, thus helping keep our seniors actively ageing.

The day was a great success, with most of the attendees excited about utilising these facilities on a regular basis from now on.

The Active Ageing Bus Tour was also a great lead in to the Chittering Seniors Health Expo. The inaugural Seniors Health Expo was held on Thursday, 14 November 2019 at the Bindoon Town Hall.  This event was approximately six months in the planning and was achieved through the combined efforts of the Chittering Health Advisory Group and the Shire of Chittering.

Twenty four Stallholders representing a wide range of organisations attended on the day with all stallholders indicating that the day was successful both from the perspective of reaching out to existing and potential customers and for networking amongst themselves.

The Bindoon Primary School Choir was really popular with everyone enjoying the sing along to an old favourite “Stand By Me” words and music by Ben E King, Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller.

The Chittering Bindoon CWA provided a beautiful morning tea and lunch for all stallholders and attendees.  This was really well received by all, the scones especially!

One hundred gift bags were originally provided by the Public Trustee containing information on Wills, Enduring Power of Guardianship and Enduring Power of Attorney.  These gift bags along with the Expo program were provided to attendees at the door. Shire staff gathered information from all stalls and have filled the remaining bags which are available from the Shire for anyone who was unable to attend on the day.

The week of celebrations would not have been possible without funding and sponsorship from COTA WA, Lotterywest, Department for Communities, Chittering Landcare Group, Water Ponyz Swim School, Gener8 Fitness, Bendigo Bank Bindoon, BEAT, and the Chittering Bindoon CWA.

Residents can contact Alison Reliti or Lisa Kay at the Shire of Chittering on 9576 4600 or chatter@chittering.wa.gov.au for more information about how to stay active in Chittering, or to pick up one of the information bags from the health expo.
