Development
Property Information
Before purchasing any property within the Shire, it is advisable to check with Council's Planning and Building Department to check whether there are any zoning restrictions, flooding problems, filling requirements, building restraints or subdivisional problems involved. Failure to do so could prove costly to the purchaser.
Development Approval
A planning approval must be obtained from Council before a commencement of development or use of land or premises for any purpose.
Submission of an application will require relevant application forms and technical drawings. Applications are subject to fees according to value and complexity of assessment.

Subdivision and Amalgamation of Land
Applications for subdivision of land into small lots or for the amalgamation of individual lots are required to be lodged initially with the Western Australian Planning Commission. The Commission then refers each application to the Council for comments and a recommendation, however, the Commission makes the final decision.
Prospective applicants are requested to discuss proposed subdivisions with Council staff.
Planning Policies
Council adopts planning policies relating to the use of land for particular purposes. Some policies apply to land throughout the district, while others apply only to defined areas. The purpose of these policies is to assist towards consistent decision-making when Council is exercising discretionary power provided by way of the provision of the Town Planning Scheme.
Planning department staff advise enquirers of any planning policies or developments affecting particular properties.
Policy statements are available to the public on request.
Planning and Development Enquiries
Enquiries in connection with any matters concerning zoning, development standards, subdivisional proposals and general planning requirements should be made to the Planning Department during normal working hours.
New Projects and Policies
A New Town Planning Scheme No 6 and Local Planning Strategy are now operational throughout the Shire of Chittering. This replaces the previous Rural Strategy and Town Planning Scheme No 5.
