The Shire of Chittering hosted CARE – Chittering’s Annual Recognition Event – for Volunteers last Saturday evening at Stringybark Winery, with over 100 of our local ‘unpaid workers’ taking advantage of the opportunity to enjoy a night off in like-minded company with plenty of good food, made even more palatable with a couple of drinks.

The aim is to bring together all volunteers in order to appreciate their overall contribution within the Shire.

Shire CEO, Mr Alan Sheridan, acted as MC (and bus driver!) for the evening.  He welcomed all attendees, acknowledging that “This evening’s hospitality is a token gesture for everyone who gives their time so freely for the good of others.  We simply cannot thank our volunteers enough, nor afford to pay them for their actual contribution to our community”.

Shire President, Mr Gordon Houston, summed up the importance of volunteers in Chittering by quoting Volunteering Minister, Mick Murray, saying that "West Australians are undoubtedly generous, with an estimated 80 per cent of people aged 15 years and over, giving their time for the good of the community.  Without their contributions, our economy and our communities, particularly small country towns, would grind to a halt.”

The following volunteers were recognised on the evening;

  • Alex Douglas, Joan Bathgate and Lois Jones, Continued Service to the Bindoon Library
  • Ann Graham, Lifetime Member Chittering Wildlife Carers
  • Bindoon Arts & Crafts, Bindoon Mens Shed and Chittering Art Society, School Holiday Program
