On Saturday 20th April the Shire of Chittering officially opened the Muchea Recreation Centre, affectionately known as the MRC.
State sporting association representatives from Netball WA, Basketball WA, and WA Cricket Association, alongside Chittering Junior Football Club representatives and Tiny Tots tennis showed just how many different ways you can get active at the new venue. Adults and kids alike had fun on the courts and oval, and joined Council, local sporting clubs, community, and dignitaries Mr Shane Love, Member for Moore, and Hon Martin Aldridge, Member for the Agricultural Region to officially open the new centre for recreation in Chittering. After the formalities everyone gathered together to celebrate and enjoyed a movie under the stars.
Projects the size of the MRC don’t just happen, they are a testament to the community’s vision, tenacity, and commitment over many years. Shire president, Cr Aaron King thanked the Muchea Senior Cricket Club, Chittering Junior Cricket Club, Chittering Junior Football Club, Muchea Netball Club, and Muchea Judo Club, as well as community members Brian Chipchase, Simon Cox, Louise Yates and the wider community of Muchea for all the work they had put in to bringing this facility to realisation.
“What started as the addition of a new changeroom building to accommodate the increasing participation of girls in both Football and Cricket, has grown to become be a modern, collaborative, community and sporting space for the residents of the Shire of Chittering and the surrounding communities. The new building is helping to connect the clubs that use it with each other, and with the wider community, and it provides much needed facilities to help both the Cricket and Football clubs encourage and support the development of female participation in sport.” Shire President, Cr Aaron King.
The Shire of Chittering contributed around $5.5 million in funding to this project, a major undertaking for a small local government, and was also fortunate to receive additional financial support totalling around $ 500,000 from the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries, Wheatbelt Development Commission, Cricket Australia, Australian Football League, Bendigo Bank, Kleenheat, Tronox, and the clubs of Muchea Hall, to help bring the project to fruition.
Around 200 people attended the opening across the day, and the new facility is already showing just how much it is a hub for the local community, providing social connection, as well as physical wellbeing for the residents of the Shire of Chittering.
